Being an owner-operator commercial trucker can be a very lucrative career; however, as with all jobs, there are certain costs that truckers have to pay in order to maintain their business. Just like an executive has to pay for attire, and teachers have to pay for supplies, truck drivers also have to pay certain expenses for materials and supplies that are necessary to operate their business.

What types of costs do owner-operator commercial truckers have to account for? If you are planning on becoming a truck driver, here is a look at some of the business expenses that come with the job.

Truck Maintenance

Your rig is the heart of your business. If it’s not in good condition, you won’t be able to run your business, which is why routine maintenance is so important. If you work as an owner-operator, maintenance costs will come out of your own pocket, and include things like the cost for DEF & industrial coolant, new tires, windshield wipers, and any other maintenance-related costs are your responsibility.

Room and Board

For jobs that require you to be on the road for any length of time, you are going to need food and shelter. As an owner-operator, any food that you purchase and any hotels that you stay in (for those nights when you want don’t want to be crammed in your rig,) are your responsibility to pay for.

Licensing and Permits

Your license and permits are essential as an owner-operator commercial trucker. When it comes time for renewals, you will have to pay for any costs that are associated out of your pocket.

While these expenses are your responsibility, do keep in mind that because they are business expenses, you can write them off at tax time and receive a reimbursement.
